Starting seeds indoors is the fastest way to get more production from your garden. A $3 packet of tomato seeds started indoors in March produces plants that fruit 4-6 weeks earlier than direct-sown seeds. That's a month of extra tomatoes in a 90-day growing season β and it costs less than buying starts from a nursery.
Most beginners fail at seed starting for one of two reasons: insufficient light (seedlings stretch toward windows and get leggy) or overwatering (the most common killer of indoor seedlings). The kits below address both problems.
Our Top Pick: Jiffy 72-Pellet Greenhouse
The Jiffy works because the pellets are genuinely effective and the system is simple enough that you won't abandon it after one use. 72 cells is enough for most home gardeners β start your tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and flowers in one tray. The humidity domes maintain consistent moisture without daily misting. We've germinated 90%+ of seeds in these trays consistently.
If you're growing warm-season crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant), add a heat mat β it cuts germination time in half for these heat-loving plants. The Hydrofarm combo is the right choice if you want everything in one box.
Seed Starting Rules That Actually Matter
- Light immediately after germination β the moment a seedling emerges, it needs 12-14 hours of light per day. Windows are rarely enough. Use a grow light or LED shop fixture within 2 inches of the tops.
- Water from below β set trays in a pan of water and let them wick up moisture. Watering from above promotes fungus gnats and damping-off disease.
- No fertilizer until true leaves β seedlings don't need nutrients until they have two sets of true leaves (after the initial seed leaves). Plain water is fine until then.
- Harden off for 7-10 days before transplanting β take plants outside for a few hours per day, increasing time and sun exposure gradually. Transplanting without hardening off causes shock and stunted growth.
