The Vego Garden beds look gorgeous in Instagram reels. They also cost $200β$400. You can build an equally functional 4Γ8 cedar raised bed for $60β$80 in lumber β and fill it with a better soil mix than anything that ships in a bag.
Materials List
For a standard 4Γ8 raised bed, 12 inches deep:
- 3 boards of 2Γ10Γ8 cedar or untreated Douglas fir (~$15β$20 each at Home Depot)
- 1 box 2.5" exterior deck screws
- Weed barrier fabric (optional but recommended)
Total lumber: $45β$60. Hardware: $8. Weed barrier: $12. Total: under $80.
The Mel's Mix Soil Formula
One-third compost + one-third vermiculite + one-third peat moss. Fills a 4Γ8Γ12" bed (32 cubic feet) for about $60β$80 in materials. Never use native soil in raised beds β it compacts, drains poorly, and brings weed seeds.
Assembly Steps
- Cut the 8-foot boards: two stay at 8 feet (long sides), cut one board into two 4-foot pieces (end caps)
- Pre-drill corners to prevent splitting
- Drive 3 screws per corner, staggering angles for strength
- Lay weed barrier in the bottom, overlapping 6 inches at the seams
- Fill with soil mix, water thoroughly, let settle 24 hours before planting
