The Zion Narrows is a hike through the Virgin River, inside a slot canyon with walls 1,000 feet tall and sometimes only 20 feet wide. It is one of the most visually extraordinary hikes in North America. It is also frequently ruined by people who show up without understanding what they're doing.
What the Day Hike Actually Is
The "Narrows from the bottom" is a permit-free day hike starting at the end of the Riverside Walk, a 2-mile paved path from the Temple of Sinawava shuttle stop. From the Riverside Walk end, you wade into the river. The canyon narrows as you go. Most day hikers go to Wall Street (about 1.5 miles upstream) and return. The whole thing is 3-4 miles with significant wet hiking.
When to Go
Spring runoff (March-May) makes the Narrows impassable or dangerous. Flash flood season (July-September monsoon afternoons) requires checking the flash flood forecast on the Zion NPS website before entering โ the river can rise 10 feet in minutes from a storm miles away. The best times: May-June (before monsoon) and October-November (cool, lower water, beautiful light).
What You Actually Need
Trekking poles are essential โ the riverbed is slippery and uneven. Rent a pair and neoprene booties from the many rental shops in Springdale for $15-30/day. These dramatically reduce falls and cold feet. Canyon shoes (canyoneering footwear with sticky rubber) are sold at rental shops for $70-90. Skip this if you're just doing a day trip โ rental gear is fine.
Timing Your Visit
The Zion shuttle runs from early spring through late fall. The first shuttle from the visitor center is at 5:45am โ take it. The Narrows fills up fast. Weekdays have significantly fewer people than weekends. If you arrive at 7am and start hiking, you'll have long stretches of the canyon nearly alone. Arrive at 10am on a Saturday and you're in a traffic jam of neoprene.
