You don't need $200 hiking boots. The $120-$150 range has better options today than the $200 range did five years ago. We tested 14 pairs over six months โ€” on rocky ridgelines in Shenandoah, root-choked trails in the Smokies, and rain-soaked mudfests in the Pacific Northwest โ€” to find the five worth buying.

What we looked for: waterproofing that actually works, outsoles that grip on wet rock, enough ankle support for uneven terrain without feeling stiff, and a fit that doesn't require a breaking-in period longer than a weekend.

How We Tested

Each boot was worn on at least 40 miles of trail before we formed opinions. We tested in wet conditions, dry conditions, hot days, and cold mornings. We specifically looked for: how the boot performed when wet (waterproofing test), how it gripped on wet slate and root-covered trails (outsole test), and how the foot felt after 8+ miles (comfort and fit test).

Our Top Pick: Merrell Moab 3 Waterproof

The Moab wins because it fits the widest range of foot shapes, has the most durable outsole, and costs $20-30 less than the competition. The Vibram TC5+ outsole grips on everything from wet granite to loose gravel. The EVA midsole absorbs shock well enough that we didn't notice foot fatigue until mile 10+.

The KEEN Targhee is the right choice if you have wide feet โ€” it's half an inch wider at the toe box and genuinely comfortable for all-day wear. The Salomon is for hikers who move faster and want a more athletic feel.

What to Look For in Hiking Boots

  • Waterproofing: GORE-TEX and KEEN.DRY both work. Don't pay extra for it if you're in a dry climate โ€” it reduces breathability.
  • Outsole: Vibram outsoles are the industry standard. If the boot doesn't specify the outsole brand, it's probably not Vibram.
  • Ankle support: Mid-cut boots (above ankle) are better for rocky, uneven terrain. Low-cut works fine for well-maintained trails.
  • Fit: Try boots in the afternoon โ€” feet swell throughout the day. A snug fit in the store will be too tight on the trail.
