How We Tested

Every pair was tested for: ANC quality against a 70dB office background, call quality on both ends (we recorded ourselves and had testers rate clarity), battery life measured from 100% at medium volume, and fit over 4-hour sessions. Pricing reflects street prices as of May 2026.

1. Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) — Best Overall

If you're in the Apple ecosystem, these aren't a recommendation — they're the obvious answer. The H2 chip's ANC is genuinely excellent, Transparency mode sounds natural, and the spatial audio with head tracking is the best implementation on the market. Battery life hits 6 hours (30 with case), and the stem squeeze controls are more reliable than touch controls on competing products.

Who should skip them: Android users get a hobbled experience. No LDAC, basic controls, no Adaptive EQ.

2. Sony WF-1000XM5 — Best ANC

Sony's noise canceling has been industry-leading for two generations and the XM5s don't break that streak. These block more ambient noise than the AirPods Pro in our testing — measurably, consistently. The compromise is slightly worse call quality in wind and a case that's not pocket-friendly.

The V2 processor and 8.4mm drivers produce Sony's characteristic warm, detailed sound. At $198 they've come down $30 from launch. Worth it if silence is your priority over ecosystem integration.

3. Jabra Elite 8 Active — Best for Sport

The Jabra Elite 8 Active survived everything we threw at it: sweaty HIIT sessions, a light rain run, and an accidental drop in a sink. The IP57 rating isn't marketing — these were designed for abuse. ShakeGrip coating kept them in place through workouts that dislodged every other earbud we tested. ANC is good but not Sony-class.

4. Nothing Ear (2) — Best Value with Premium Features

The transparent stem design has moved from gimmick to genuinely nice to look at. More importantly, the Nothing Ear (2) includes LDAC high-res audio support, 11.6mm drivers, and solid ANC at $99. For Android users who want premium features without paying AirPods Pro prices, this is the pick.

5. Soundcore Liberty 4 NC — Budget Champion

At $59, the Liberty 4 NC does things no one should be able to do at this price: adaptive ANC, 50-hour total battery life (10hr earbuds + 40hr case), and LDAC support. Sound quality doesn't challenge the Sony or Apple options, and the plastic build feels cheap. But if you need ANC earbuds under $60, nothing else competes.

What We Didn't Pick

The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 are excellent for ANC but lost points for a chunky fit and poor touch controls. The Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro are the AirPods equivalent for Galaxy users but awkward on iOS/Windows.
