Two of the best earbuds on the market. Same price tier, both with best-in-class ANC, both with flagship sound. The right choice is more obvious than you'd think.
ANC Performance: Edge Sony
We tested both against a consistent 70dB fan background. The Sony WF-1000XM5 blocked 4-6dB more ambient noise in our listening tests. The difference is real but not dramatic in daily use β both earbuds silence a coffee shop or open office effectively. On planes, the Sony advantage widens slightly.
Sound Quality: Tie
The AirPods Pro 2 sound more "accurate" β flat frequency response, spacious stage, excellent separation. The Sony WF-1000XM5 sound warmer, with elevated bass and a more "engaging" presentation. Neither is objectively correct. It's preference. Both support head-tracked spatial audio in their respective ecosystems.
Sony's LDAC codec support is a meaningful advantage for Android users β hi-res audio streaming with compatible apps. AirPods Pro don't support LDAC and cap out at AAC on non-Apple devices.
Fit and Comfort: AirPods Pro
This is personal, but the AirPods Pro's ear tip design fits more people across more ear geometries. The Sony XM5s require a precise seal for their ANC to work effectively β if you don't get the fit right, you're losing most of the advantage. Both come with multiple tip sizes. Take the extra time to try all Sony tips before concluding on fit.
Ecosystem Integration: AirPods Pro Win Decisively
On Apple devices, the AirPods Pro 2 have no competition. One-tap pairing, instant device switching across iPhone/iPad/Mac, Siri integration without a wake word, precise Find My integration, and live transcript assistance features. The Sony app (Sony Headphones Connect) is excellent software, but it's just an app β not an OS-level integration.
On Android, the tables flip. The Sony's LDAC support, multi-point Bluetooth, and Android companion app have no counterpart from Apple.
Battery Life: Push
AirPods Pro 2: 6 hours (30 with case). Sony XM5: 8 hours (24 with case). The Sony earbuds last longer per charge; the AirPods case holds more total charge. Which matters more depends on your charging habits.
The Verdict
This is one of the easiest premium recommendations to make: Apple ecosystem β AirPods Pro 2. The OS integration is worth more than the Sony's slight ANC edge. Android or platform-agnostic β Sony WF-1000XM5. You get better ANC, LDAC, and excellent multi-platform support. Both are at the same price β neither is a bad buy.
